Federal Criminal Records
(National Availability)

Includes information from federal districts in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Input criteria is limited to name only. There is no provision for indexing by name and date of birth, or by social security number. For that reason, whenever possible, a full name, including middle name and other designation (Jr., Sr. II, III etc.) should be provided. Periods of time covered vary, depending upon when individual federal districts joined the system. Five to seven year coverage can usually be expected.

Note: The federal system is separate and completely apart from Florida statewide criminal records maintained by FDLE or any county records system.

You will not find information on arrests by federal agencies unless you run a check of the federal system.

When should you do a federal criminal record check?

The answer is whenever you want to be sure you’ve done a thorough search.

Here are some considerations.

Most arrests occur at the city/county level. By comparison federal authorities arrest fewer offenders, so chances of finding a record in terms of the total number of arrests made by all law enforcement agencies aren’t as good in the federal system. Nevertheless, there are tens of thousands in federal prisons or on parole.

Also, records are indexed by name only. The federal system still doesn’t provide for verification by date of birth or social security number. Which means when you request a check it helps to have the most complete information possible, including a middle initial. This helps eliminate confusion when there are numerous returns on the same name.

The best feature of the federal criminal system is that it’s the closest thing to an all-encompassing nationwide search you can get. That’s because a single inquiry scans the entire system in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Here are some of the types of criminal offenses that can be found in the federal system:

Arson

Assault

Bank Fraud

Bribery/Graft

Burglary

Civil Rights Violations

Conspiracy

Crimes Against Children

Counterfeiting

Domestic Violence and Stalking

Drug Trafficking and Manufacturing

Espionage

Telemarketing Fraud

Violations of certain State Motor Vehicle Laws

Any of the above criminal violations resulting in arrests by federal authorities will never be found in the Florida statewide system. They will also not be found at the county level in Florida or in other state systems.. They will only be found by checking the federal system.

The fact is most people never check federal criminal records, possibly because they expect a check of the statewide system in Florida will include all
arrests that have occurred within State boundaries.

It will not!

Federal felons know this and count on the fact that almost nobody ever checks federal criminal records, so if asked many will take the chance and lie to get a job, or for whatever reason they might have.

Avoid nasty surprises. Order a Federal Criminal Record Search whenever you want to be certain you’ve done a thorough check.
