Florida you can order a Statewide
Criminal Check.
Most assume it’s an all-encompassing check, but it’s
not. Before the State can provide criminal records the
arrest/conviction information has to come from the
county level. If the county doesn’t report, the State
doesn’t get the information and neither will
you.
Also,
statewide records can exclude misdemeanor arrests. If
the arrest is reported the record will show it. But what
if it isn’t reported? Then the only place you’ll
find the arrest is in County
Criminal Records.
If
your subject was arrested by a federal agency, such as
the FBI, DEA, ATF, U.S. Marshall’s, etc., the
arrest will not be in county or statewide
records. The only way you’ll ever find it is by
checking Federal
Criminal Records.
When
should you do a federal criminal record check?
The
answer is whenever you want to be sure you’ve done a
thorough search.
Here
are some considerations.
Most arrests occur at the city/county level. By
comparison federal authorities arrest fewer offenders,
so chances of finding a record in terms of the total
number of arrests made by all law enforcement agencies
aren’t as good in the federal system. Nevertheless,
there are tens of thousands in federal prisons or on
parole.
Also, records are indexed by name only. The
federal system still doesn’t provide for verification
by date of birth or social security number. Which means
when you request a check it helps to have the most
complete information possible, including a middle initial. This
helps eliminate confusion when there are numerous
returns on the same name.
The best feature of the federal criminal
system is that it’s the closest thing to an
all-encompassing nationwide search you can get. That’s
because a single inquiry scans the entire system in all
50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

arrests by federal authorities will never be found in
the Florida statewide system. They will also not be
found at the county level in Florida or in other state
systems. They will only be found by checking the
federal system.
The
fact is most people never check federal criminal
records, possibly because they expect a check of the
statewide system in Florida will include all
arrests that have occurred within State boundaries.
It will not!
Federal felons know this and count on the fact
that almost nobody ever checks federal criminal records,
so if asked many will take the chance and lie to get a
job, or for whatever reason they might have.
